The Plays of Anton Chekhov
The Plays of Anton Chekhov

Chekhov with wit, warmth, and stage life

This is a great pick if you want classic drama that feels alive rather than distant or overly literary. Paul Schmidt’s translations bring back Chekhov’s dry humor and human messiness, so the plays read with surprising ease and emotional clarity. If you like stories where longing, frustration, and comedy all sit in the same room, this collection can feel quietly devastating in the best way.

Note: While we do our best to ensure the accuracy of cover images, ISBNs may at times be reused for different editions of the same title which may hence appear as a different cover.

Description

These translations of Chekhov's major plays—The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, and the rest of his theatrical canon—are by a Russian-language scholar who is also a veteran Chekhovian actor. Schmidt preserves the spirit of the text, balancing fidelity with accessible language and capturing the humor and historical context often missing in other translations. His translations have been staged across the United States by directors such as Lee Strasberg, Elizabeth Swados, Peter Sellars, and Robert Wilson, and critics have praised their accessibility and accuracy. Contents include Swan Song, The Bear, The Proposal, Ivanov, The Seagull, A Reluctant Tragic Hero, The Wedding Reception, The Festivities, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, The Dangers of Tobacco, and The Cherry Orchard.
