Description

Tulsidas (1532-1623 AD) was a poet and philosopher who told the story of Ram, prince of Ayodhya, in Avadhi, a dialect of Hindi spoken in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. Ram Charit Manas consists of over a thousand stanzas, each about 10-18 lines. Over the years, it has been dramatised and performed by numerous theatre troupes. The dramatisation is known as Ramlila and has become an integral part of Dassera celebrations, especially in the regions that speak Hindi. By telling the story of Ram in a common language, Tulsidas made the Ramayana, which was originally written in Sanskrit, accessible to the masses. This Amar Chitra Katha Special Issue brings together Ram Charit Manas in five sections: The Childhood Days of Ram, Ram in Exile, The Abduction of Sita, The Search for Sita, and Ram the Victorious.
