Description

From Bentham's question of what happiness is and how to measure it, this book examines how positive psychology, behavioral economics, and a flood of TED Talks have shaped a culture obsessed with quantifying satisfaction. Through anecdotes—from a Buddhist monk addressing business leaders at Davos to the Nike FuelBand's impact on fitness anxiety, and from urban redesigns guided by oxytocin research to a Radisson Hotels survey claiming that 62% value well-being more than work or relationships—the work argues that metrics steer our self-perception and often leave us wanting. The pursuit of happiness, it contends, can contribute to rising depression and anxiety.
