H. Stuart Hughes is emeritus professor of history at the University of California at San Diego. He was formerly professor of history at Harvard University. Among his many books are Prisoners of Hope: The Silver Age of the Italian Jews, Consciousness and Society, Between Commitment and Disillusion, and Sophisticated Rebels.   Stanley Hoffmann is Buttenwieser University Professor at Harvard University's Center for European Studies. He is the author of Primacy or World Order: American Foreign Policy since the Cold War, World Disorder: Troubled Peace in the Post-Cold War Era, and In Search of France, among others.
