Description

Set in 1654 in New England, the homeland of the Algonquian-speaking Pocasset, Wampanoag, and Narragansett peoples. The pilgrims — called coat-men by the Wampanoag — have settled on lands long inhabited by these tribes at Patuxet, a site the English later named Plymouth. Weetamoo's father, Corbitant, is sachem (chief) of the Pocassets. He is wary of the colonists and passes his views about them to his daughter, the next in line to become Pocasset chief. Weetamoo must learn the fundamental values and disciplines of a Pocasset chief.
