Voltaire: Candide and Other Tales

In Voltaire's day men went to prison for their liberalism: when “Candide” first set men laughing and thinking it had slunk into the world without its author's name, and even in Protestant Geneva it was publicly burned by that model democracy. Like the men of the eighteenth century who snatched “Candide” fresh from the press, we bless its creator for the stimulus and entertainment of this unique work.
