Description
It is Vienna in the year 1913-14; Imperial glory is fading before catastrophe. Ulrich is the hero, the man without qualities, totally uncommitted and unattached. He has acted a role of civil stupidity, loved adventurously, watched the fate of the sexual maniac Moosbrugger. But here, in the third volume, the main theme emerges fully: "the last love-story of all". Throughout the novel the characters are all obsessed by forms of love that cause agonies of inner conflict; now Agatha appears, the “forgotten" sister, embodiment of a great and homeless love.
