Description

The Algerian war lasted nearly eight years (1954–62) – almost twice as long as the First World War. France's 130-year involvement in Algeria had started, ominously enough, with the toppling of the last Bourbon throne, and the war itself was to cause the fall of six French prime ministers and the collapse of the Fourth Republic itself. The story told so masterfully in “A Savage War of Peace” is at once a heroic and a tragic one, and poses issues of enduring relevance beyond the confines of either geography or time.
