For thinkers curious about language in context

This is a rewarding read if you like ideas that reshape how you see everyday conversation. Van Dijk makes context feel alive and mental rather than just a list of social facts, which gives the book its real spark. Readers who enjoy linguistics, discourse analysis, or pragmatics will likely appreciate how it connects language, cognition, and social interaction in a deeply thoughtful way.

Description

How do social situations influence language use, discourse, and conversation? This monograph presents a multidisciplinary theory of context and how context influences language use and discourse. Unlike earlier approaches that treat context as objective social variables such as gender or age, contexts are conceived as constructs of the participants themselves—subjective definitions of the communicative situation—expressed in the sociocognitive notion of context models. These models dynamically influence language use and ensure that discourses are appropriate for the communicative situation, forming the basis of pragmatics. The book examines context models from a sociolinguistic and cognitive perspective.
