Description

Translation and commentary of a foundational text in Kashmir Shaivism and Tantra. The book explores Mahamudra, the Great Cosmic Gesture, and the transmission of its teachings from teacher to student, including Kalu Rinpoche. It also discusses the Vijnanabhairava Tantra as a key source text on Yoga. The Spandakarika, the "Tantric Song of the Divine Pulsation," is traditionally said to have been revealed to sage Vasugupta by Shiva on Mount Kailash. In his commentary on the fifty-two stanzas, the sage Ksemaraja described them as the heart of Mahamudra. The oldest masters of the Spandakarika viewed everything in the universe as consciousness and built a yoga practice from this realization. The sacred dance of Yoga Spandakarika, Tandava, is subtle and demanding, yet it offers access to the divine inner pulse. After mastering its third stage, the yogi or yogini can manifest Shiva's dance in space, a notion echoed in Tantric temple statuary in India and Tibet. Energy is no longer contracted by duality, and the mind and body become unbounded, forming a sphere that contains all that was previously outside. Daniel Odier presents these teachings as transmitted from his Tibetan master Kalu Rinpoche and Kashmiri yogi Lalita Devi.
