Description

Los Heraldos Negros (The Black Heralds) is César Vallejo’s first book of poetry, originally published in 1919. The collection gathers Vallejo’s early poems that wrestle with human suffering, isolation, and social concerns, signaling the emergence of his distinctive modern voice. This bilingual edition presents the Spanish text alongside Rebecca Seiferle’s English translations and includes her introduction, which explains the translator’s approach to Vallejo and the context of his work. The volume features poems such as “Our Bread,” illustrating Vallejo’s lyrical intensity and experimental language. Vallejo (1892–1938) was a Peruvian poet whose later work, including Trilce, pushed his linguistic innovations further. He spent much of his life abroad and remains celebrated for his urgent, visionary poetry.
