Description

At first glance, a book of reggae album covers looks a bit 'coffee table', but don't be put off. Back in the day, money was tight and these records had to be sleeved as cheaply as possible. Original artwork was eschewed in favour of photographs of the artist in often relatively mundane surroundings, sometimes only yards from the offices of the record company in question. The book comprises Alex Bartsch's present-day photos of reggae album sleeves held up in front of the spot where they were taken so many years ago. The resulting book feels like a social history of the parts of London where the original photos were taken, and of the Afro-Caribbean people who live(d) there. It's certainly more substantial than any other book of album artwork I've encountered.
