Description

This comprehensive study examines Saul Bass, one of the most influential American designers of the 20th century, highlighting his work in film, corporate identity, and graphic design. With more than 1,400 illustrations, many previously unpublished, the book is written by design historian Pat Kirkham and features material from the Bass archive. Bass (1920–1996) helped transform graphic design by expanding its scope to include film titles. He created iconic posters and title sequences for films such as Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and Otto Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm and Anatomy of a Murder. He also developed famous logos and identity campaigns for major companies, including AT&T, Quaker Oats, United Airlines, and Minolta. Elaine Bass, his wife and collaborator, joined the office in the late 1950s. Together they produced award-winning short films, including the Oscar-winning Why Man Creates, as well as numerous film titles from Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus in the early 1960s to Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear and Casino in the 1990s. Designed by Jennifer Bass, Saul Bass's daughter, and written by Pat Kirkham, the book presents many images from the Bass archive and offers an in-depth account of a leading graphic artist of the 20th century.
