Description

How accurate was "informed opinion" in the North about conditions in the ante-bellum South? Whittier, Emerson, Thoreau, Longfellow, Bryant, Melville, Whitman and other literate Northerners wrote frequent, influential denunciations of white Southerners. Justified as was their moral attack on the institution of slavery, most of them knew precious little about the region they discussed so authoritatively or the people whom they excoriated.

Published 1958.
