The Mexican Indians and the Etruscans, both peoples overshadowed by a nearby civilisation seeming more efficient and progressive, fascinated Lawrence who towards the end of his life grew increasingly convinced that the acquisition of civilisation in the popular sense involved damage to the human spirit.
