John Howard the Philanthropist

This booklet has been prepared by Joyce Godber to mark the 200th anniversary of the publication in 1777 of Howard's classic work The State of the Prisons. Its intent is to describe the man rather than his work. Miss Godber's skilful presentation accomplishes both with ease, and gives us a fascinating glimpse of one of the great reformers of the 18th century.
