Description
The "History of the Kingdom of Naples", now appearing in English for the first time, is considered by many of Croce's disciples to be the finest expression of his historiography. Born of Neapolitan parents, Croce was able to combine empathy with historical detachment in this account of his native South. Always colorful, often eloquent, he gives a convincing explanation of the age-old contrast in southern Italy between a fertile cultural life on one hand and an inveterate lethargy on the other. Since the end of World War II the problem of the South has been the subject of continual controversy, with Croce's history serving as a frequent point of departure.
