Archaeological Research on the "Forbidden Hill" of Singapore: Excavations at Fort Canning, 1984

Early records and legends indicate that Fort Canning Hill was the seat of government of a 12th-14th century settlement on the island of Singapore. In 1983, plans were afoot to beautify the Hill and redevelop it into a historical and cultural park. There was therefore an urgent need for archaeological research on the hill in order to verify these reports before it was too late. The National Museum's exploratory excavation on Fort Canning Hill in January 1984 was the first attempt ever made in Singapore to undertake archaeological research on scientific lines.
