Life as a pilgrimage had been a common theme in literature long before John Bunyan, village boy, soldier, tradesman and preacher, dreamed his dream of Christian's journey to the Celestial City. But Bunyan's allegory is not so much that of Christian soul on its earthly journey towards eternity; it is rather the story of Bunyan's own pilgrimage. He himself is Christian and he relates his own spiritual adventures, temptations and dangers in the form of allegory. Those who befriend or hinder Christian or share his journey are real people, and they speak as they spoke in life.
