The Ray Draper Quintet Featuring John Coltrane was recorded December 20, 1957 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, with Ray Draper on tuba and John Coltrane on tenor sax. Originally released in 1958 on the New Jazz label as NJLP 8228, this edition is a 2022 reissue by Sowing Records (UPC 781930069274). The program features a six-track set including Clifford's Kappa, Filidé, Two Sons, Paul's Pal, Under Paris Skies and I Hadn't Anyone Till You, with Coltrane appearing on tracks 1-5. The rhythm section - Gil Coggins on piano, Spanky DeBrest on bass, and Larry Ritchie on drums - drives the performance with a tight, forward-looking groove.
