💌 #6: Have you heard of Pop Yeh Yeh? 🎸🕺🏻

If you follow us on Instagram you’d have seen that recently we’d started Thryft Vinyl, an additional section in our store selling preloved records! In fact, this newest endeavour of ours started almost serendipitously, with an arrangement with Ashley from Wildflower Wax Co. Right as she was preparing to close her “one-kid show”, Ashley generously took a chance on Second Story: Peace Edition by leaving with us the last of her inventory. (Happily, her records sold well at Peace Centre!)

After all it’s made sense we think, that we offer in our store books and records together; there is a certain harmony to the pairing. I mean, imagine… playing yourself slow jazz on a record, as you curl up in your armchair with a cosy mystery and a glass of wine, or a mug of hot tea, after a long day at work or on a rainy Sunday afternoon… isn’t it divine, already?! 😮‍💨

A new partnership with The Retro Factory 🍾

That's why we’re STOKED to announce we’re partnering with The Retro Factory, who has curated for us a collection of over 200 classic and rare records, including records by local and regional musicians from the 50s 😱 Of this selection, we’ve got records from Pop Yeh Yeh, a psychedelic rock movement in Malaysia and Singapore, roughly spanning from 1964 to 1970.

According to Sublime Frequencies, Pop Yeh Yeh artists “cross-pollinated electric sounds of the West with Malay melodies, and added their own local poetic voice to the lyrics they wrote, sung in Malay (and sometimes Bawean). Pop Yeh Yeh musicians started out playing in styles inspired by Western groups like The Beatles* and Cliff Richard, but they eventually succeeded in creating a sound all their own — a sound that is not only accessible to the Western ear, but also retains an undeniable Malay personality.”

*In fact, the term Pop Yeh Yeh is taken from “She Loves You - Yeh, Yeh, Yeh” by The Beatles.
