Twenty centuries ago, a ferocious, mysterious force hidden in a solitary tower annihilated a squad of Roman soldiers advancing through the Sahara desert. There was a single survivor: the Etruscan diviner Avile Vipinas, who later described the horror of the creature in the tower, and suggested how the being could be destroyed. But just what is the dark being that slumbers in the tower? And who are the fierce desert-dwelling Blemmyae observed by ancient travellers: might they truly exist? To find the tower and solve its unutterable mystery, three men venture into the heart of the Sahara: an archaeologist following the traces of his father, a colonel from the Foreign Legion thirsting for revenge, and a priest who puts his faith to the ultimate test.An archaeological thriller and a love story, a philological puzzle and a mystical enigma, The Tower tells the tale of a proud and fearless people who dared to challenge the root of all evil, against the fascinating backdrop of the ancient Mediterranean civilizations.

This classic work by the late Professor Wong Lin Ken (1931-1983) has been acclaimed highly for its meticulous research and penchant for detail and is widely recognized as making a valuable contribution to Southeast Asian economic history. It was written when the author was only 24 years old and submitted as part of his Master's thesis at the University of Malaya, then in Singapore. This study was first published as an MBRAS monograph in 1961, and has since been out of print. At a gathering of historians of Southeast Asia in Singapore in October 2002, a warm tribute was paid to Wong Lin Ken's scholarship and several requests were made to the MBRAS for a reprint of his classic study. The current reprint of his monograph was meant as a tribute to this elusive yet brilliant scholar. The current reprint comes with a short preface by Professor Wang Gungwu about the author, whom he first knew when they were both undergraduates and graduate students at the University of Malaya in Singapore in the 1950s.

The New Cambridge Shakespeare appeals to students worldwide for its up-to-date scholarship and emphasis on performance. The series features line-by-line commentaries and textual notes on the plays and poems. Introductions are regularly refreshed with accounts of new critical, stage and screen interpretations. For this second edition of King Lear, Jay L. Halio has added a new introductory section that focuses on recent developments in scholarly criticism as well as on contemporary productions of the play. The edition features a comprehensive account of Shakespeare's sources, including literary, political and folkloric influences on the work. Halio's text is edited from the Folio and he explains the differences between the quarto and Folio versions, alerting the reader to the rival charms of the quarto by sampling parallel passages in the Introduction and by including in an Appendix annotated passages that are unique to the quarto. An updated reading list completes the edition.

Richard III is one of Shakespeare's most popular plays on the stage and has been adapted successfully for film. This new and innovative edition recognizes the play's pre-eminence as a performance work: a perspective that informs every aspect of the editing. Challenging traditional practice, the text is based on the 1597 Quarto which, it is argued, brings us closest to the play as it would have been staged in Shakespeare's theatre. The introduction, which is
illustrated, explores the long performance history from Shakespeare's time to the present. Its critical engagement with the play responds to recent historicist and gender-based approaches. The commentary gives detailed explication of matters of language, staging, text, and historical and cultural contexts,
providing coverage that is both carefully balanced and alert to nuance of meaning.

Documentation of the extensive textual variants is organized for maximum clarity: the readings of the Folio and the Quarto are presented in separate banks, and more specialist information is given at the back of the book. Appendices also include selected passages from the main source and a special index of actors and other theatrical personnel.

This landmark study of European international politics is a worthy complement to A.J.P. Taylor's classic The Struggle for Mastery in Europe 1848-1918 . Paul Schroeder's comprehensive and authoritative addition to the Oxford History of Modern Europe charts the course of international history over the turbulent era of 1763-1848 in which the map of Europe and much of the world was redrawn time and again. Schroeder examines the wars, political crises, and intricate diplomatic transactions of the age, many of which, especially the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and the Congress of Vienna and its aftermath, had far-reaching consequences for modern Europe.Schroeder also provides a new sharply revisionist account of the course of international politics over these years and a major reinterpretation of the structure and operation of the international system. He shows how the practice of international politics was transformed in revolutionary ways with extensive and beneficial effects. The Vienna Settlement established peace, he demonstrates, by abandoning, not restoring, the competitive balance-of-power politics of the eighteenth century, and devising a new political equilibrium in its stead. A European consensus on a new political balance was developed, with new rules to maintain it, ushering in a uniquely peaceful, progressive period in European international politics. This wide-ranging and penetrating study will be of great interest to historians, political scientists, and students of international relations.

Then one night, on assignment for the award-winning Travelers magazine in the wine region of Argentina, a beautiful woman makes him an offer he can't refuse. Soon Will's bad choices--and dark secrets--take him across Europe, from a chateau in Bordeaux to a midnight raid on a Paris mansion, from Dublin to the Mediterranean to the cliffs of Iceland. As he's inexorably drawn into a web of international intrigue, it becomes clear that the network of deception ensnaring him is part of an immense and deadly conspiracy with terrifying global implications--and that the people closest to him may pose the greatest threat of all.
